About This Session

Healthcare leaders across the country are navigating a shared post-pandemic landscape marked by workforce transitions, evolving care demands, and persistent health disparities—challenges felt most acutely by community hospitals. This session highlights how one academic medical center serving one of Maryland’s most vulnerable populations responded by launching a disciplined, hospital-wide transformation grounded in three strategic pillars: Team, Quality, and Access.

Attendees will gain an inside look at how leadership rebuilt trust and stability of the workforce, hardwired safety into daily operations, and redesigned patient flow to improve access without new beds or bricks-and-mortar expansion. Through practical examples—daily safety huddles, data-driven service line partnerships, multidisciplinary throughput management, and frontline recognition—this presentation moves beyond theory to show how leadership engaged its workforce, embedded safety into daily practice, and built a culture that elevates the hospital as a great place to work, learn, and receive care.

With outcomes including a >60% reduction in hospital-acquired infections, significant improvements in engagement and retention, and meaningful reductions in length of stay and ED boarding, this session offers actionable strategies that healthcare leaders can apply. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to translate strategic priorities into daily practice—and how to create a sustainable culture where safety, equity, and access advance together.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how integrating Team, Quality, and Access into standard work and multidisciplinary operations drives sustainable improvements in safety, workforce stability, and patient outcomes.

  • Explain how daily safety huddles, service line engagement, and patient flow management strengthen patient outcomes and timely care delivery.

  • Apply practical strategies from a systemwide transformation to improve staff engagement, reduce hospital-acquired conditions, and expand access for vulnerable populations in resource-constrained settings.
