Strengthening Nursing Home Safety
Safe care matters in every setting. As the Mid-Atlantic Patient Safety Center expands its work across the continuum of care, we are bringing our patient safety expertise to an area of growing importance: nursing home safety.

At the request of the Maryland Health Care Commission, MPSC is working with nursing home providers, state agencies, residents and families, healthcare organizations, and other partners to better understand the most significant safety challenges facing nursing home residents—and where coordinated action could make a difference.
Building on what already works
We are approaching this work as a convener and patient safety organization, not as a nursing home regulator or as the expert on nursing home operations.

Our role is to bring together the people who know this work best, combine different sources of information and experience, and create the conditions for shared learning and action. Just as importantly, we want to understand what is already working so that new efforts strengthen—not duplicate—the many quality, regulatory, and improvement initiatives already underway.
From shared understanding to collective action
MPSC is establishing a Nursing Home Safety Steering Council to help guide this work. Together, we will:

Identify the safety issues that warrant greater attention.

Understand where current efforts are succeeding and where meaningful gaps remain.

Learn from providers, residents, families, regulators, and other stakeholders.

Explore practical opportunities for coordinated, practice-level improvement.

Identify areas where organizations working together can accomplish more than they can alone.
This is an early stage of the work.
We are not beginning with a predetermined list of priorities or a new program to implement. We are beginning by listening, learning, and bringing the right people to the table.

Our aim is straightforward: build the relationships, shared understanding, and improvement infrastructure needed to make care safer for nursing home residents.
